He’s only been in the game for a few years but comedian Seann Walsh has certainly made a name for himself in the stand-up community. Plus he has lovely hair.
With appearances on 8 Out of 10 Cats, Mock The Week, Stand Up For The Week, Grouchy Young Men as well the recent series of Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow we caught up with Seann before he joins the thousands up in Edinburgh this August…
Edinburgh’s nearly upon us. What are you most excited about for this year’s Fringe?
I’m really looking forward to doing my show this year. I performed in the room twice last year to do 2 extra shows and I think those were the best ones so hopefully it will continue that way.
Your new show is called ‘Ying and Young’ – what’s the general gist and why should audiences part with their hard-earned cash?
First of all I spelt Yin wrong. It is actually meant to say Yin. I sent that information off in the very early hours of the morning some time ago. Oops. This show is a stand-up show. I suppose it takes a little look at how things have changed since I was a kid. Things change and grow a lot quicker than they use to so there’s a lot of things that have been and gone since I was a child. What the hell am I meant to do with all these videotapes I bought!!!?
Aside from your performances up in Edinburgh, what other shenanigans do you foresee yourself getting up to during your stay up there?
I will try and be well behaved but I’ve said that every year and it’s not panned out well. Last year I got banned from the C-Venues before the festival even started
You’ve had a pretty busy year, what have you learned (if anything) about the stand up business since you were first starting out?
Face the right way!
You’re playing some of the outdoor festivals as well this year. What are your tops tips for surviving them?
I’m probably the worst person to ask advice for. Last year I fell asleep outside a tent (not my tent) in the sun and got absolutely fried. My face looked like it could have been the new face for the nose on Comic Relief.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
There are many. I’m from Brighton and I grew up watching live comedy at the Komedia. The first time I got to play there was very special and I always love going back. Then there are “bigger” moments like the night of recording for Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.
…And the lowlight?
The first time I died was a bit of a shock. It was in Bournemouth. Afterwards, when I was changing trains at Clapham Junction, I just lied on the platform (at least it wasn’t the tracks) and stared at the sky for about an hour. Of course it was in London so people just stepped over me as if it was perfectly normal.
There’s a video of you on YouTube supposedly being ‘attacked’ by a drunk girl. You offered her a piggy back. Is that the best way to get out of a sticky situation?!
My mate put that up!!! Bastard! I don’t know who that girl is. I remember her name was Rose and she pulled my hair! So the lesson is, if someone pulls your hair then offer them a piggy back and one of your best mates will think it’s worth putting on YouTube.
What’s the weirdest dream you’ve ever had?
Hovered to Happy Shopper to buy a snickers and hovered back. Rubbish dream.
The other day you also said on Twitter (we’ve been stalking you) that you ate a pack of giant chocolates for breakfast. How long was it before you regretted that decision?
It’s the first and last time I accepted the chocolate for a pound at WHSmiths at the train station! I wonder do they still say ‘chocolate for a pound?’ if all you take to the counter is chocolate. I might try that.
When was the last time you laughed ‘til you nearly peed?
When I was with comedian Carl Donnelly and he shook the sales assistant’s hand after buying a phone! Who does that!!!?
Would you rather be invisible for a day or be a woman for a day?
Probably have to be a woman because to actually be invisible I’d have to walk around naked, which I wouldn’t like.
How do you get your locks so lustrous and curly?
It’s a wig. Sorry.
Finish the sentence: ‘The best thing about being a stand-up is…’
…the pasties from petrol stations at 3 in the morning.
Seann will be performing his ‘Ying and Young’ show in Edinburgh nightly at the Pleasance Beneath at 8.15pm and we’re told can also be spotted on numerous Edinburgh pavements in a drunken, slumbering heap mumbling Chinese philosophy.
