Since winning Chortle’s Funniest Student competition in 2007, 25-year-old Tom Deacon has since fronted BBC Switch’s 5:19 Show and now spends his Sunday nights entertaining the throngs of Radio 1 listeners up and down the country.
Tom is also busy making a proper name for himself in the stand up circuit so Comedy Central posed some random questions at him to get behind the wheel of the Deacon mobile and take him for a test drive…
If you had 5 minutes and 19 seconds to do whatever you liked without fear of reprisal what would you do?
Eat a banana in public. I’d know that no one could watch me and think anything sexual.
Intentional bath farts with Pixie Lott aside, what’s been your most awkward/funniest/embarrassing moment with a celebrity guest?
Being topless in a bath with Dappy from N-Dubz for an interview. This happened after I’d got excited about being in the bath with Tulisa in a bikini, then at the last minute the producer decides it’ll be funnier to have two guys in the bath?!
What’s the weirdest dream you’ve ever had?
Having my own show on Radio 1.
You won Chortle’s Funniest Student competition a while back. What advice would you give young comedians trying to make their mark in this biz we call show?
Don’t bother, go home, comedy is full up now!
What comedic gems can we look forward to in your upcoming live show?
I have a big confession to make to the audience about me and my girlfriend’s Dad, plus I have a whole book of things that are annoying me to enjoy with a crowd.
What advice would you give Charlie Sheen right now, if any!?
There are other porn stars that you can hang around with, don’t stick to just two.
If you HAD to, would you rather shout ‘BORING!’ at the top of your lungs at a best friend’s wedding, or let a dog lick your lips for a full minute?
I’d have to shout ‘boring!’ because dogs are able to lick their own balls.
Are you for or against the ‘Go Compare’ man?
My house mate said to me after just watching one of the ‘go compare’ adverts, that I would probably end up doing an advert like that… I was gutted. So I think I’m pro him, he could be a future me. (I’m hoping not like)
What would the title of your autobiography be?
‘I did it all with my right hand!’
Finish the sentence: ‘The best thing about being a stand-up is…
You don’t have to work in an office with a guy called Steve who gets over excited by stationery and you, not being overly keen, steal one of his items off his desk; he’s angered, files a complaint at you, the manager takes a dim view and you get asked to leave….
Tom Deacon is performing at The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl on April 15th, Liverpool Comedy Festival on April 28th, The Junction, Cambridge on April 29th and Wrexham University on May 11th. For full tour dates and further info see Tom’s Facebook page.
